First off, the entire
team would like to thank George Harley and his team for the very
warm welcome and kind hospitality that the team received.
This was the team's first visit to Sandia Motor Speedway, so there
was a lot of unknowns about the track, but with the Showdown race
this coming weekend, the team wanted to try a couple of ideals for
the car's set up and use this race as a test session. The car
unloaded fast and the team was satisfied that they had a good base
set up for the car. The track had very little grip so Rip and the
team worked hard to get more bite off of the corners. Rip posted
the third fastest lap in practice. Rip qualified tenth and would
line up on the 5th row outside. At the drop of the green flag, Rip
made his way the front. He got up to fourth on lap 45. The team
was pleased with the way the car was handling. On lap 50, a
caution flew, on the ensuing restart the car developed a
carburetor problem. When the green came out Rip hit the gas but
the car stalled, he fell back to 9th. Rip made his way up to
second with 5 laps to go. With two laps to go a yellow came out,
the team felt they had the car to beat and were ready to take the
win. When the field went back to green, the carburetor problem
returned and Rip fell to 5th where he finished the race.
"We were a little disappointed with our finish," said Rip. "We
passed a lot of cars but the carburetor issue just killed us. We
had a great car, but that is how it goes sometimes in racing. It
was nice to be competitive and put on a good race for all the
Stock Building Supply associates that were in attendance."
Rip's next race will be this weekend for the Toyota All Star
Showdown at Irwindale Speedway
