Consistence is what Rip Michels and his Stock Building
Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle Chassis/ Chevrolet were looking
for this past weekend in the “Auto Trader 150” at Colorado
National Speedway (CNS).
In the two previous races this season, Rip and the team had scored
one top five, and one top ten. The team unloaded the car for
Friday’s open practice session and knew from the first lap that
they had a good car. “We concentrated mainly on our race set up,”
said Crew Chief John Schuetze Jr. “We worked on the balance of the
race car all day Friday and the car was really fast.”
The team was happy with the car as they posted fast enough lap
times to place them within the top three cars. On Saturday, the
team was still able to post times within the top five and Rip was
happy with the way the car was performing.
As the team lined up for qualifying, they wanted to qualify in the
top five to get a good starting position. Rip turned a lap of
16.295 good for 7th fastest in qualifying. The invert was 8
putting Rip on the outside front row for the race.
When the green flag dropped, Rip immediately went into the lead.
Rip set a blistering pace but the lead was short lived as the car
became tight in the middle of the turn. On lap 22 Rip fell to
second and by lap 56, Rip was in fifth where he would finish the
night.
“I was a little concerned because we were really loose in
qualifying,” said Rip. “ We had not experienced a loose condition
like that all weekend. So we tightened up the car for the race.
Unfortunately, we went a little to far in our adjustment. I am
still happy with our finish, we have two top five’s and three top
ten’s in three races. So we have been consistent, and that is what
we have been working on.”
Rip currently is tied for second 30 point out of the lead. The
team’s next race will be at Altamont Speedway on July 2, 2006.
