Fresh off their sixth place finish at Shasta Raceway Park, Rip
Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory Circle
Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing team will be making the
eleven hundred mile trip to the great state of Colorado to compete
in this coming weekend’s “Auto Trader 150” at the 3/8-mile at
Colorado National Speedway.
This race is the second annual “Face Off” between the drivers from
the Nascar AutoZone Elite Southwest Series division, and the
Nascar AutoZone Elite Midwest Series division. It is expected to
bring together 46 of the best short track race car drivers from
the Midwest and Southwest regions. With 32 cars starting the race,
qualifying will be critical. Rip has three starts at Colorado
National Speedway, resulting in a 19th, 18th, and 8th place
finishes. Rip also captured his first career Bud Pole Award in
August of 2005 by circling the 3/8-mile track with a lap time of
16.243.
The Team:
“The team is really pumped up about this race,” said mechanic Chris
Lazalde. “We have always run well here, but we have also had our
share of bad luck. This track has some of the best fans, the race
is usually a sell out and the hospitality we are shown by the fans
is awesome.”
The Drivers Corner:
“Colorado National Speedway is probably one of my favorite tracks
that we compete on, even though it has been an up and down roller
coaster ride for us competing at this track,” said Rip Michels.
“It is a track that is similar to my home track, Irwindale
Speedway, where we have had such great success. Unfortunately, we
have had a lot of bad luck here. My first race here we got into
fluid on the track that put us in the fence while we were running
second. We had mechanical problems the second time here. Our third
trip here, we got our first Bud Pole. During the race we got into
fluid on the track again, we fell back to 14th before we made our
way back to an 8th place finish. We feel like we have a good shot
at a win on this track, I know we are going to give it 100%.”
The Car: Destiny
Chassis Destiny is the workhorse for our race team. In its last
eight races it has finished in the top ten seven times. It also
captured the team’s first Bud Pole here at Colorado National
Speedway back in August of 2005.
The Road That Leads To The Showdown:
The Invitational Only Toyota All-Star Showdown is a race that
brings together the Top Ten in points at season’s end, from each
of the four Elite divisions of NASCAR from across the country. The
top 40 teams will compete against each other in a nationally
televised race from Irwindale Speedway. In the chase for the
exclusive invitational only race that will be held tentatively in
October of 2006, Rip Michels currently sits 5th in the points, 25
points out of first.
The Race:
The “Auto Trader 150” race at the Colorado National Speedway
3/8-mile oval is located in Danco, Colorado. Practice starts at
12:00PM with qualifying at 4:50PM. The race is scheduled to start
at 8:10PM. For more information about tickets or the track,
