Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory
Circle Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing team will be heading
to Northern California this weekend to compete in the “Shasta 125”
at Shasta Raceway Park in Anderson, California. This will be race
number 12 of 14 for the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Series
Division.
The last time the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Southwest Division visited
Shasta Raceway Park was back in 1989. The legendary West Coast
Driver, Dan Press, won the race. Dan Press happens to be one of
Rip’s biggest heroes when he was growing up. On the current list
of drivers who compete full time in the series today, there has
only been one driver who has competed at this facility. That is
11th place competitor, and ironman of the division, Bob Lyons, who
will be making his 284-career start in the Southwest Series. Mr.
Lyons has been competing in the series since 1987.
Since no one in the top ten has competed at Shasta Raceway Park in
this division, it could be anyone’s race. Mixed that in with local
driver and other series competitors, the field of 28 scheduled
drivers should be in for a real exciting night of racing.
The Team:
“The entire team is really excited about this weekend’s race,” said
Team Owner, Laurie Michels. “The team is really pumped up after
their victory two weekends ago at Rocky Mountain Raceway in Salt
Lake City, Utah. We felt like we hit on a set up that could take
us to our first victory.”
The Drivers Corner:
“Since this will be my first visit to Shasta Raceway Park, we
really went with a very conservative chassis set up on the car,”
said Rip. “What I have been told from other racers who have
competed at the track is that it is a tight 3/8 mile oval, similar
to the now defunct El Cajon Speedway in San Diego, California. I
know that if we can get the car to work like it did at Rocky
Mountain Raceway, we will have a great shot at getting a good
finish.”
The Car: Destiny
This car was built in 2004 from the great people at Victory Circle
Chassis. It has had 5 starts this year with finishes of 11th, 7th,
12th, 16th and a 1st place finish at Rocky Mountain Raceway.
The Road That Leads To The Showdown:
The Invitational Only Toyota All-Star Showdown is a race that
brings together the Top Ten in points at season’s end, from each
of the four Elite divisions of NASCAR from across the country. The
top 40 teams will compete against each other in a nationally
televised race from Irwindale Speedway, in the chase for the
exclusive invitational only race that will be held on November 10,
2005 at Irwindale Speedway. Rip Michels currently sits 9th in the
points, 439 points behind first, and 73 points in front of 11th.
