Rip Michels and his Stock Building Supply/Ladco Racing/Victory
Circle Chassis Chevrolet captured it’s seventh top ten of the
season with their tenth place finish this past Sunday at Tucson
Raceway Park.
This was Rip’s first time competing at the famed track in Tucson,
AZ. He was looking forward to racing at a track that has launched
so many careers from the west coast racing alumni. The car was
fast right off the trailer and the team felt confident that they
had a good race set up. Rip qualified in the ninth position with a
time of 15:791.
During the main event Rip started ninth and quickly moved his way
up through the field, battling for the third place position. By
lap seventy-five the car became very loose which caused Rip to
fall back to tenth place where he ended up finishing the race. Rip
was the AutoMeter Rookie of the race for the eighth time this
season.
“The car was great for the first seventy-five laps, but then it
became way too loose. Rather than push a bad situation, we just
tried to get the best finish out of the car that we could,”
commented Rip. “This season continues to be a learning experience
for us, we now have been to all the tracks and we have excellent
notes that will help us for next year,” said Rip.
“When we met back in December of 2003, we set up what we thought
where realistic goals for this team,” said John Schuetze Sr.,
Chief Mechanic, “We felt that we could finish in the top ten and
would have a legitimate shot at winning the rookie of the year
title. The team has worked so hard to accomplish these goals, and
with one race left, we know we have a shot at making those goals a
reality,” said John.
Rip and the team will be heading to Phoenix for the last race of
the season on Thursday, November 4th. Rip only needs to start the
race to capture the AutoMeter Rookie of the year award. If he
finishes 38th or better, he will solidify his position in the top
ten in points. This will make Rip and the team eligible to compete
in the special invitation only race on November 11, 12, and 13th
at Irwindale speedway. More information on this race will be
available after Nov 4th.
