Rip
Michels and his Stock Building Supply/ Ladco Racing/ Victory
Circle/ Chevrolet racing team made their second start in a new
Victory Circle chassis. Rip won his first 2004 feature Saturday
night in a 75-lap Super Late Model race at the half-mile Irwindale
Speedway. The San Fernando driver and his team donated a portion
of their winnings to the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Orange
County.
Michels is the 2002 & 2003 SLM track champion at IS and the 2003 Sunbelt
Regional champion. Rip has been racing the Stock Building Supply
Monte Carlo full-time this season in NASCAR's Elite Division
Southwest Series. He currently ranks tenth in points and is
leading the series rookie of the year battle.
“It was a great night for us,” said Rip. “ During the first practice we
discovered significant changes needed to be made. We got the car
better for qualifying and qualified in the 6th position. The team
kept working on the set up and when the race started, I knew we
had a great car,” commented Rip.
Rip narrowly made it through a lap 5 crash that took out the top four
cars. Rip inherited the lead and never looked back. “I was really
looking forward to racing with Greg Pursley. He has been such a
dominate force in the SLM division at IS. I wanted to see how we
would stack up against him and the rest of the stellar field at
IS. After Greg’s crash, I sent my crew to the hot pit lane to see
if he needed any help. I am glad to see Greg win the IS
championship this year.” said Rip.
As of right now, we have a total of $2,600 that was collected from fans,
friends, family, and fellow racers. Rip and his team would like to
thank all those who contributed to the John Wayne Cancer
Institute.
