New Schedule draws reaction
IRWINDALE - The newly configured 2000 Irwindale Speedway schedule could be
one of feast or famine, according to several drivers who competed at the track last year.
The speedway - which begins its second season at 7 tonight with a full slate of
NASCAR races, including the $15,000 Home Depot Super Late Model 100 - has eliminated its
heat races and will have longer feature events.
"For the top guys,it's not a big deal,"said Rip Michels of Mission Hills,
who will compete in tonight's Grand American Modified class race. "We'rarely were in
the heats. But for the guys trying to qualify, it will make a difference."
The track's trophy dashes - for the fastest six qualifiers - will remain in place.
But instead of qualifying heats, the track will have a lesser main event for the slower
qualifiers, with the top finishers being added to the main event.
"If something was not right, you could change things and check for leaks during the
heat races," said John Watkinson of Santa Clarita, a Grand American driver. "I
think (the change) is political."
