MICHELS 30 LAPS AWAY FROM GRAND AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP!
Rip Michels from Mission Hills, CA is 30 short laps away from his second Grand American
Modified championship and his first at Irwindale Speedway. Michels, who won the 1997
championship at Mesa Marin in Bakersfield California, needs to finish 8th or better this
Saturday night to clinch the title! By doing this, Rip would win the championship in
convincing fashion with one race still remaining in the 2000 season. To sum it up in a
single word, Rip has been "dominant". During the 2000 race season at Irwindale
Speedway, Michels has been simply amazing! Throughout the year, Rip has acquired many
statistics that have stood out over the competition. In 10 races thus far on the year, Rip
has accumulated 8 wins, a track record (still standing), 5 fast times and an amazing 66
point lead in the championship hunt. With the support of car owner Lee Ladd, the bright
red #12 Cardservice/Ladco Racing Grand American Modified has been on a tear! Teammate
Brian Kelley, who drives the #77 Cardservice/Ladco Racing Super Late Model and his Kaos
crew have also been a great help to Rip in his championship quest. Rip has matured as race
driver and has definitely proved that over the course of the 2000 season. "Rip's on a
whole different level than anybody else" states Kelley after Michels most recent main
event win. This season has undoubtedly been a family affair. Many of Rip's family members
including his wife, mother and brother have made the trip to Irwindale week in and week
out to support and participate in his championship efforts. With the help of them and the
rest of Rip's crew members, 2000 will go down in history as a very memorable year and race
season. "I have a lot of great people that support my racing and I couldn't do it
without them" exclaims Rip, "It's been an incredible season!".
